Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers can be used to fix a variety of concerns related to facial aging, including:

  • Adding volume and smoothing out the deep creases that run from the nose to the mouth (called nasolabial folds or laugh lines).
  • Plumping thin lips and smoothing out vertical lines around the edges of the lips.
  • Augmenting cheeks to enhance their shape, often restoring youthful fullness.
  • Filling out depressions (hollows) under the eye area.
  • Making indented scars from acne or chickenpox more even with surrounding skin.
  • Increasing volume to fill out gauntness in the lower cheek or temple area, which most often occurs due to fat pads shifting beneath the surface of the skin.

Dermal fillers are a naturally-derived or synthetic material that is directly injected into the skin with the purpose of plumping that area to the point where the wrinkle, depression, or fold is gone. Depending on the type of filler, the effects can last anywhere from six months to two years.*

Don’t confuse dermal fillers with Botox. Although both procedures involve injections, Botox is most often injected around the forehead and wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet) to stop muscle movement that results in wrinkles. It has nothing to do with the plumping smoothing effect dermal fillers have.

Because they work in different manners, many people elect to get both Botox and dermal fillers—the combination can produce a remarkably younger-looking face.*

The choice of which filler to use to volumize depends on many factors including but not limited to what region is to be filled, how much volume correction is required, expected duration of effect, cost, and client and injector preferences. Sometimes it makes sense to use more than one type of filler at the same time. It is a decision best made by an experienced injector while evaluating an individual client’s facial anatomy, desired correction, and preferences.

Kybella will contour the shape of your lower face by reducing fat and resulting in a more defined chin and jawline. The severity of submental fullness varies from absent to extreme in both men and women. Depending on the severity, the right candidate may need 2 to 6 treatments. Kybella’s main active ingredient, deoxycholic acid, wipes out fat. Deoxycholic acid is a similar synthetic version of a molecule that your body produces naturally to break down fat. When injected, fat membranes are removed and the remaining is absorbed back into the body. The drug’s additional inactive ingredients include benzyl alcohol, dibasic sodium phosphate, hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride, sodium hydroxide, and water for injection.*

kybella before and after

Patients with apparent platysmal bands may not receive optimal results and post-treatment may need Botox® Cosmetic to treat skin laxity in the neck.

How does Kybella® work?

Our medical provider will inject (up to 50 injections) Kybella into the fat directly under your chin. Most patients will require 2-4 sessions, depending on the size of the area and amount of fat. The treatment will be repeated every 4-8 weeks until desired results are achieved. Patients can always wait longer to receive their second session to continue their progress due to events or lifestyles.*

What are the risks and side effects?

Side effects include bruising, induration, redness and numbness that can last for up to 4 weeks, and trouble swallowing. An uncommon side effect is a temporary damage to the marginal mandibular nerve, causing an asymmetric smile that will resolve in days or weeks.*

Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty

There is an alternative to undergoing a traditional rhinoplasty using injections instead of a scalpel. Non-surgical rhinoplasty or liquid nose job is a quick office procedure for patients who are not interested in the surgical option for changing the appearance of their nose.

The non-surgical rhinoplasty involves the use of a dermal filler such as Juvederm or Radiesse. These fillers can be used to build up a flat nasal bridge, make a slightly crooked nose appear straighter, reduce the perception of a dorsal hump, or create better symmetry in a nose with minor contour irregularities. Because filler injections augment areas of the nose, it cannot be used or expected to narrow the nose or create more definition or refinement in the tip of the nose. If this is your goal, then a traditional surgical rhinoplasty should be considered and discussed with Dr. Turowski.

There are several advantages of the non-surgical rhinoplasty. It does not require a trip to the operating room. The injections are performed in as little as 15 minutes. You will see your results quickly. There is no downtime, and little to no bruising. The results can last 6-12 months depending on the type of filler that you choose. Newer fillers on the market may last 2 years or more. Because the results are temporary, you can decide to continue the injections to maintain your new look, pursue a long-term solution through a surgical rhinoplasty, or restore your original appearance by allowing the fillers to resorb over time.*
